In sports follow through is important. Whether you are shooting a takedown or teeing off how you finish is crucial to your result. The same is true for parenting. Recently I made a comment to my 3 year old son that he and I would go camping without the girls this summer.
“Like a date?” He asked.
“Uh, no, like a guy trip.” His homophobic father answered.
Since that moment he hasn’t stopped talking about our pending summer camping trip–or referring to it as a date.
Father/Son camping trips are some of my fondest childhood memories and gauging from his enthusiasm they will be for Judah, too. I know this is something that means a lot to him and therefore I MUST follow through on it.
It is unrealistic to say you will never let your kids down in some way here or there. However, it’s important to take advantage of those clear cut significant opportunities and follow through on them. It is equally important to learn not to make promises that you won’t be able or plan on keeping. Make promises and follow through on them.
The result just might be two points or a hole in one!
