My sons ability to communicate has really grown over the last couple of months and my ability to decipher what he’s saying has as well. In fact, even my daughter is starting to make some sense to me. The other day Elli spilled Judah’s cup of water on the floor and he began to cry about it so I decided to use my dad-skills and distract him while I soaked up the water. I told him it wasn’t a big deal (gotta love Pergo floors) and that I would get him some more water. Then I asked him, “Judah, do you know where our water comes from?” To which he boldly responded, “Yes!” I was a little bit surprised and thought maybe Tamra had taught him the concept of well water so I asked him, “Where does it come from?” He casually pointed to the kitchen and said, “Over there!” At that moment the concept of “child like faith” was made plainly evident.
My son doesn’t know we’re in a recession. My son doesn’t know that my 401k has less money in it now than his piggy bank. He doesn’t know that people are struggling to find jobs. All he knows is that when he wants water it comes from the kitchen. It made me think about Matthew 6 when Jesus says not to worry about what we’ll eat, wear, or where we’ll sleep because God is faithful to provide for the animals and we are way more important to him than stupid birds are.
That’s not to say we can live carefree and just wait for a pile of money to manifest on our front porch. We must be wise in lean times. If we’ve been irresponsible and overextended ourselves during the time of feasting we may experience what we consider famine by our American standards. But, if we’re faithful to God he will be faithful to us and continue to meet our needs–minus our greeds.
So, rather than worrying about our economy and how we will survive I am just going to get a glass of water. Even though I know where it really comes from (forty-two feet below my front yard) God has provided enough for us to leave the electricity on and pump that water whenever we want it. Prove of my God’s provision is, as my son said, “over there”.
Remember: trust God, be wise, be thankful, and as Jesus said, “Let tomorrow worry about itself”. Go have some water.
